How to Drink Whisky: Neat, With Water, On the Rocks or as a Highball

There’s no single “right” way to drink whisky, but there are better ways for each bottle. In short: sip good single malts neat or with a few drops of water, enjoy bourbon and smooth blends on the rocks, and turn everyday blends into a refreshing highball with soda or ginger ale.

1. Neat

Room temperature, no ice, in a tulip-shaped glass (a Glencairn is ideal) to concentrate the aroma. Best for: single malts and premium blends such as Glenfiddich 12, Macallan 12 or Johnnie Walker Gold Label. Take small sips and let the whisky coat your mouth.

2. With a few drops of water

This isn’t snobbery – it’s chemistry. Researchers at Linnaeus University in Sweden showed in Scientific Reports (2017) that when whisky is diluted to around 45% ABV or less, guaiacol – a key smoky flavour molecule – moves to the surface of the glass, where you smell and taste it. Add water a few drops at a time, especially to cask-strength or smoky whiskies like Talisker or Ardbeg.

3. On the rocks

Ice chills and slowly dilutes the whisky, softening the alcohol. Use one large cube so it melts slowly. Best for: bourbon (Buffalo Trace, Woodford Reserve), Tennessee whiskey (Jack Daniel’s) and smooth blends (Chivas 12, Black Label) in a hot Amman summer.

4. Highball

The Japanese-style highball is the most refreshing way to enjoy whisky: a tall glass full of ice, one part whisky to three parts chilled soda, and a lemon twist. Swap soda for ginger ale with Irish whiskey. Best for: Johnnie Walker Red Label, The Famous Grouse, Ballantine’s and Jameson.

What is the best way to drink whisky?

It depends on the whisky: sip single malts neat or with a few drops of water, enjoy bourbon and smooth blends on the rocks, and mix everyday blends into a highball.

Why do people add water to whisky?

A little water brings flavour compounds such as guaiacol to the surface of the glass, which can make the aroma and taste more pronounced, according to a 2017 study in Scientific Reports.

Does ice ruin whisky?

No. Ice chills and dilutes the whisky, which softens the alcohol; use one large cube so it melts slowly.

What is a whisky highball?

A tall glass of ice with one part whisky and about three parts chilled soda water or ginger ale, finished with a lemon twist.

What glass should I use for whisky?

A tulip-shaped glass like a Glencairn for neat whisky, a heavy tumbler for whisky on the rocks and a tall glass for highballs.
