100% agave vs “mixto”
Mexico’s official tequila standard allows two categories: 100% agave, made only from blue Weber agave sugars, and plain “tequila” (often called mixto), which must contain at least 51% agave sugars. If the label says “100% de agave”, you’re getting the purer, more flavourful style. Patrón, Don Julio, Avión and 1800 are 100% agave; many budget golds are mixtos – perfect for shots, less so for sipping.

How to drink tequila

Tequila vs mezcal
All tequila is technically a type of mezcal, but tequila must be made from blue Weber agave in designated Mexican regions (mainly Jalisco). Mezcal can use many agave varieties and the hearts are often roasted in earthen pits, giving a smoky flavour.
